1st weekend of August
The colour and tradition of one of the biggest folk festivals in Minho. A
harmonic union between the sacred and the profane. Four days of party and joy
during which ancient traditions mix with the rhythm of a throbbing, modern
city. Here it is possible to feel the Portuguese spirit, unique and always
prone to merriment and joy.
The City Festival and the Gualterianas of Guimarães constitute a huge folk
festival. These festivities take place once a year, during the first weekend of
August. Apart from the traditional religious events, such as masses and
processions, the programme of the festival includes the celebration of a
bullfight in a prefabricated enclosure which is set up for this purpose every
year; horse races; several parades and daily merrymaking, and it is always
characterised by a spectacular firework session to mark the end of the
festival.
