The festivities of San Froilán, a lucense by birth and patron saint of
Lugo, are celebrated between the October 5 and 12 and are the most colourful
and massively attended in Galicia. Thousands upon thousands of people flock to
the old capital on these dates, especially for Domingo das Mozas , a
massive event.
A great fairground full of attractions, a medieval fair, traditional Galician
music in the streets and squares, a large number of concerts with top
international acts... and the octopus stands, large detachable restaurants
where the tasty cephalopod is served a feira (with olive oil and
paprika), along with other traditional festival meals. It all adds up to San
Froilán in Lugo being an unforgettable experience.
Octopus is also during the rest of the year, and Lugo is famous for having the
best anywhere. But the foundations of Lugo's gastronomy are mainly the
excellent meats of these lands, from animals bred most naturally, and the
extraordinary fish and seafood of Galician waters.
Lugo has an old and glorious tradition of casas de comidas (economic ally
priced restaurants) which has flowered in recent years into new restaurants, of
the fancier sort as well as medium range and cheap, but which generally have in
common the use of top quality products and great care in their preparation.
Prices, however, are notoriously low.
We should not forget the bread, since bread in Lugo is probably among the best
in the world, not to mention the empanadas (savoury pies).
