Only five out of the ten gates of the city walls that still exist nowadays are
of roman origin, although they have been subsequently remodelled. The Porta
Miñá is the most genuine of all. This gate is generally known as Puerta del
Carmen, because it is placed opposite to the chapel of El Carmen. It is also
called Porta Miñá, because it leads to the roman way to the river Miño. It
still keeps inside it the cavity reserved for the guards, although it has been
altered, since the upper part that gives access to the chamber was walled up.
This chamber was used up to the 19th century as a chapel devoted to San Ramón.
This gate would closed with a double-leaf door, whose frame can still be seen
today, and with a spiked gate, whose traces can still be observed in the side
walls.
