Santiago offers, at its popular Mercado de Abastos (central market), every
Galician product of the sea and of the fields, which the restaurants prepare
with simple recipes so as to avoid masking their freshness and original
flavours.
Seafood, fish and octopus, different kinds of meat, rice, empanadas (savoury
pies) and cheese; white and red wines of the five Galician wine producing
areas. Spirits and traditional desserts are a part of either the fanciest of
menus or of comforting home cooking, and appear in taverns in the form of tasty
“tapas” that accompany drinks.
Walking through the streets of Santiago, scattered with cafés and wine bars,
will also lead to the discovery of shops and workshops where the handcraft
traditions are kept alive. Together with the jewels of the plateros
(silversmiths) and azabacheros (jet trinket makers) set up in the squares they
give their names to, one can buy pottery, wrought iron objects, lace, hats,
crockery, candles, sacred images, wooden instruments, engravings, enamels and
leather goods made in the over 300 workshops. Not to mention haute couture,
since Galicia is one of the centres of Spanish fashion, and exports its most
prestigious brands all over the world.
