With 381,96 sq. km. of surface area, Terceira island, in the Azores, is elliptic in shape, 29 km long and 17,5 km wide. Its location is at 27º 12' longitude west5 38º 40' latitude north.
Angra do Heroísmo is the most populated municipality in the island, with 35.581 inhabitants. It includes 19 civil parishes and occupies a total area of 239,88 sq. km.
The landscape of the municipality is predominantly rural, with the exception of the urban nucleus of the city of Angra do Heroísmo, in which the historic centre classified as World Heritage is enclosed.
