The cultural and historic wealth of Angra do Heroísmo is reflected above all by
its flavours and folklore.
The nearly two hundred annual touradas à corda (bullfights), from May to
October, are an ever present testimony of the historic Castilian presence in
Terceira.
In June, the Festas Sanjoaninas take place, bringing thousands of visitors.
During the ten days of their duration, there are concerts, theme parades,
sports events and a very lively atmosphere, making of the Sanjoaninas the most
important profane festivities of the Archipelago.
Introduced by the first colonists, the Festivities in honour of the Holy Ghost
define the local popular culture, its architecture and its gastronomy. They
involve the entire population from Whit Sunday until Corpus Christi. During
these celebrations, the delicacies that angrenses are proudest of are served: Sopa
do Espírito Santo (a beef and chicken stew), cozido (stew)
and alcatra (ham or beef pot roast), as well as arroz doce (“sweet
rice”) and alfenim (small shapes made of sugar). All of them are
pleasant combinations of local products and species of the Orient, a living
heritage of the history of the town.
We should also feature the convent confectionery of Terceira: “donas amélias”
are a delicious example of the abundance of exotic flavours in the local
