The Forte de S. Sebastião, first defensive post of the Port of Angra, dates
from the 16th century and it was designed by Tomaz Benedito de Pesaro. At
first, it was one of the apexes of the protection triangle formed by the Forte
dos Moinhos, the old fortresses of Monte Brasil (previous to the
Filipine Fortress) and by the Forte de S. Sebastião itself.
The Forte de S. Sebastião, which once hosted the Provedoria das Armadas,
watches over the Porto of Pipas and a small bay to the East, throughout the
perimeter of its bastions. It enjoys a privileged view over the cost of Ribeirinha
and the Porto Judeu (Jewish Port), and even over the group of islands Ilhéus
das Cabras. At present, the Forte is being turned into a Pousada de
Portugal, due to the historic relevance of its decoration and its situation.
