Built upon the crypt of the previous church of S. Salvador (built during
the 15th century by Álvaro Martins Homem), the Sé was reformulated after the
establishment, in 1534, of the Bishopric in Angra. Having been finished during
the Spanish rule, the Sé has kept, from its early times, some of the most
precious treasures of sacred art in the Archipelago.
Seriously damaged during the Liberal Fights and after the earthquake of 1980,
the Sé preserves, in spite of all the misfortunes, invaluable items, such as
statues from different periods, irreplaceable furniture in exotic wood and many
other silver and gold items for religious use. We must point out the
innumerable examples of the cultural confluence of styles and materials,
resulting from the commercial life in Angra.
