The Palace is placed upon an old convent, built to hold a School of the Companhia
de Jesus in the Azores. After the Decree issued by the Marquis de
Pombal to banish the Jesuits from Portugal, and after the creation of the post
of Capitão-General of the Azores in 1766, the building started to be
used for other purposes. Partially turned into a museum, nowadays the Palace
keeps unique pieces of furniture, statues, paintings and ornamental objects
from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Jesuit School Church, also the church of Na. Sra. do Carmo, forms
part of the Palace Capitães-Generais, a three-nave building, from the
17th century. In the six interconnected side chapels, there is an ensemble of
cloth paintings of religious subject, the carved, golden altars and the Dutch
tiles.
