It is placed at the top of the Colina do Corpo Santo, a place from which the
access to the Port is easy and fast, the Solar was built for the Provedor das
Armadas. The Solar has undergone different reforms since its construction, in
the 16th century. As the maritime exchanges grew in the Route to the Indias,
the necessity to guarantee food and repairs to the ships and its crews
increased, and it resulted in a set of changes and in the enlargement of the
primitive building.
Upon the main door, we can admire the coat of arms of the Canto e Castro
family, one of the most influential and powerful families of Provedores das
Armadas. That same coat of arms can be seen in the façade of the chapel of Na.
Sra. dos Remédios next to the Solar, the biggest private chapel in the
archipelago.
