Built to host the Order of S. Francisco, the convent was constructed during the
18th century upon two pre-existent convents. Following the characteristic
architectural plan of the Franciscan austerity, the Convent of S. Francisco has
been the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo since the second half of the 20th century.
The Church of S. Francisco, also Church of Na. Sra.da Guia, has three naves
separated by two series of arches with Romanesque reminiscences. In its
interior, we can admire the golden, carved altarpieces, and the tiles, and the
outstanding ensemble of Indo-Portuguese marble statues which are exhibited in
the Sacristy. There is also another important ensemble representing different
scenes of the life of S. Francisco, which can be admired in the choir.
