The origins of the city of Évora are remote, probably pre-Roman, and it is located in an ancient territory where a wealth of prehistoric remains survives.
The historic centre occupies an area of about 107 ha. that extends over a hill of gentle slopes delimited by the city walls, medieval and seventeenth century.
The growth of the medieval town beyond the original Roman nucleus took the shape of a radio-concentric network in which the main roads led to the ancient gates of the wall.
The city is distinguished by the relative unity and harmony of its buildings, whether they be monumental or examples of popular architecture.
