The D. Isabel Gate was part of the late Roman wall, now known as the Cerca Velha
(Old Fence)0. This gateway, made up of a perfect stone arch is the only
surviving one in the entire walled area of the Cerca Velha. It marks the route
of the Roman city’s main street running east-west - the Cardo Máximo – of which
a section of well-preserved cobbles remains, under the arch.
The late Roman wall, of which this Gate is a part, was around 1,200 metres long
and contained an area of some 10 hectares. It was protected by strong stone
towers, some of which remain to this day such as those that defended the
gateways of Rua da Selaria (now Rua 5 de Outubro) and the Porta de Moura
gateway.
