The heart of Lugo, once known as Lucus Augusti, is surrounded by a Roman wall over
two kilometres long. Whoever is familiar with the beautiful medieval walls that
still stand in many European cities will be amazed by the huge size of this
unique monument, since this impressive urban fortress, already one of the
largest in its day, is today the only one to survive complete in its entire
length in the three continents spanned by the Roman Empire.
For this reason, on November 30, 2000, UNESCO included the Roman Wall of Lugo
among the list of monuments considered to be Heritage of Humanity.
