2005 © Oficina Virtual de Turismo Visit to the main monuments of Lugo’s Old Town, paying special attention to its Roman walls, declared Heritage of Mankind the 30th of November 2000.

The size and disposition of the walled city propitiates an unplanned visit. But the following itinerary may also be followed:

Enter through the gate Obispo Izquierdo, also Prison gate. From the so-called Campo do Castelo we move on to the Main Square, throbbing heart of the city, with the City Hall and other interesting Isabelline and Restoration buildings.

Then, the Cathedral and the medieval quarter which spreads around it. Plaza del Campo, with beautiful stone houses of baroque style. And then again down through Miño street, until the Puerta Miñá in the walls, which stills preserves its Roman appearance. We come back to the Plaza del Campo, and through the Rúa Nova ("new street" formed during the late Middle Ages) we get to Santo Domingo square, where we find two gothic convent churches; next to that of San Pedro, or San Francisco, we find the Provincial Museum, which combines a Romanesque cloister with the baroque kitchen of the Franciscan convent. The Museum keeps important remains from settlements dating from the Iron Age, known as Castros, as well as a huge collection of torques and other pre-Roman gold jewels.

Very near form here, in Ferrol square, we find the baroque church of San Froilán, patron saint of Lugo. Back to the Main Square, we also find the Reina street, traditional strolling area in Lugo.

It is almost obligatory to go for a traditional walk in Lugo: going around the whole city upon the city walls, in order to see the old town from above. There are many staircases in order to access it, and a ramp opposite to the Cathedral. The most interesting stretch may be the one that goes from the Obispo Izquierdo gate to the Station gate, with the remains of a Roman tower in the Mosqueira and several (seven) of the primitive staircases giving access to the defensive towers.
