The object of classification as World Heritage was the area of the medieval
town, limited by the fourteenth century walls. The oldest quarters of the town
are located there, with the most typical streets and some of its most
attractive public spaces.
Since the development of Porto was a process involving close ties with the left
bank of the river Douro, the proposal for classification includes the
emblematic D. Luís I bridge.
The protected area practically coincides with the city’s ancient
neighbourhoods, those belonging to Porto as well as those of its sister town
Vila Nova de Gaia. The latter includes hillsides forming an amphitheatre, where
the Port wine cellars are found.
