Santiago de Compostela is located near the geographical centre of Galicia, the Spanish autonomous community of which it is the capital. The council administers an area of 223 sq. km. with a current de facto population of about 116.000.
The city borders to the east with the fertile lands of the pilgrimage route of Santiago, and to the west looks toward the Atlantic coast, which at a distance of only thirty kilometres offers its beaches and fishing ports. The humid oceanic climate guarantees mild temperatures, with an annual average of 15ºC and a gentle summer.
