Santiago de Compostela has been on UNESCO’s list of heritage since 1985, where
it is described as “an ideal town brimming with history and timelessness”.
According to the declaration, to its model urban beauty and monumental
integrity is added a deep spiritual significance as the sanctuary and
destination of the Christian pilgrimage road of Santiago.
Since then the town has received several prestigious distinctions which express
the world’s recognition towards the preservation and habitability of its
heritage, such as the 1987 Flag of Honour and the 1997 Medal of the European
Council, the 1996 and 2001 Europa Nostra prize, the European Town Planning
Prize of 1998 and the 2002 UN ‘Habitat’ award for Best Practice.
