It closes the Praza do Obradoiro and is placed right opposite to the Western
façade of the Cathedral, the construction of this palace was commissioned by
the Archbishop Raxoi in 1766, as a Hall of Residence for the choirboys and the
boys attending the Seminar. The works were carried out by the French engineer
Charles Lemaur. The long façade with its colonnade provides the edifice with a
marked sense of horizontality. In the centre of the façade there is a pediment
wit a marble relief representing the battle of Clavijo, by Gambino and
Ferreiro, topped with an equestrian statue of Santiago. In the inside, its most
outstanding feature is the rococo staircase, also designed by Lemaur. At
present, it holds the premises of the City Council of Compostela, of the
Consello da Cultura Galega (Council of Galician Culture) and of several offices
of the Regional Government, the Xunta de Galicia.
